AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister of State for Modernization of the Public Sector Nasser Shraideh Tuesday said that the Ministerial Economic Development Committee has studied the new city project that the Council of Ministers referred to it last month for evaluation. He said the committee  it recommends conducting detailed studies for the project, which is expected to provide 90,000 to 100,000 job opportunities directly and indirectly during the construction period, which extends to 2033, a local media outlet reported.

 

Shraideh said that once the detailed studies are completed, the project is expected to start being implementing in 2025; the first phase will end in 2033, while the other phases will be completed by 2050.

 

Shraideh made these statements during a session held by the Jordan Strategy Forum and a team from Dar Al-Handasah Company, which had conducted preliminary feasibility studies for the project. Also attending were private sector representatives.

 

The new city, Shraideh said, will be within the Amman Governorate, and will not be an alternative capital. He added that preliminary designs for the project have been made with contemporary engineering perspective in mind that is aligned with the best international practices for infrastructure.

 

According to the project, the new city will be located 40 kilometers east of Amman, with access to highways leading to Saudi Arabia, Iraq and the Queen Alia International Airport. It will be close to a proposed freight train line which will be connected to Al Madouna.

 

Once implemented, the new city will house relocated government ministries and other entities are the important drivers of development of the new city.

 

The 2033 phase targets hiring 32,000 employees, including 27,970 public sector employees. With a total land area of 2,388 dunums and a built up area of 1.4 million square meters, it will be home to 7,400 residents.
