AMMAN — The Cabinet on Sunday approved the dissolution of all municipal councils, governorate councils, and the Greater Amman Municipality Council, effective July 7, 2025.

 

The Cabinet’s decision, made during a session on Sunday and chaired by Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, came as part of the government’s broader efforts to modernise laws and bylaws governing local administration and municipal work, according to a Prime Ministry statement.

 

“The decision was also in implementation of the pledges the government made in its policy statement and followed a series of consultations launched in early June,” the statement said.

 

The government said that it had held meetings to discuss the recommendations of the Royal Committee for the Modernisation of the Political System concerning local administration, adding that consultations will continue in the coming period.

 

It also said that the meetings aim to refine legislative proposals, strengthen financial and administrative governance, enhance transparency, and address challenges facing municipal operations.

 

A central objective is to improve public services and reinforce principles of good governance, the statement said.

 

The dissolution of the councils is intended to ensure transparency, integrity, and neutrality in the lead-up to upcoming elections, according to the statement.
