AMMAN — The Jordan Standards and Metrology Organisation (JSMO) on Thursday launched the Jordanian Eco-label (JO-Ecolabel), a national environmental certification scheme aimed at promoting green growth and encouraging sustainable production and consumption.
Developed over two years in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply, and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), the scheme assesses the environmental impact of goods and services throughout their life cycle based on scientific criteria.
Minister of Environment Ayman Suleiman said the JO-Ecolabel establishes a national framework for sustainable development by promoting the efficient use of resources and enhancing the competitiveness of Jordanian exports in international markets, where environmental standards and compliance requirements are becoming increasingly important.
He noted that the initiative incorporates environmental protection into economic activities, supporting the Kingdom's transition towards a circular economy, reducing production waste and creating new opportunities for green investment.
Acting JSMO Director General Safa Momani said the launch translates Royal directives to build a modern and resilient economy.
She noted that the certification scheme strengthens institutional credibility by providing consumers with reliable environmental information, while encouraging manufacturers to use raw materials, energy and water more efficiently.
For his part, German Ambassador to Jordan Bertram von Moltke praised the cooperation among the institutions involved in developing the initiative.
Referring to Germany's Blue Angel eco-label, von Moltke stressed that transparent environmental certification schemes provide a competitive advantage for Jordanian exporters seeking to access European and other international markets, particularly ahead of the upcoming Jordan-EU Investment Conference.
