Labour ministry suspends recruitment of foreign workers, tightens inspection measures
The Jordan Times
AMMAN — The Ministry of Labour on Thursday announced the immediate suspension of the recruitment of non-Jordanian workers.
Ministry spokesperson Mohammad Zayoud said that the decision follows a three-month period during which recruitment was temporarily allowed to address labour shortages in various economic sectors.
Zayoud noted that the ministry will not reopen recruitment without first conducting a thorough and comprehensive assessment of the labour market, according to a ministry statement.
The official also clarified that the suspension does not apply to domestic workers, who fall under a separate system, stressing that the recruitment of domestic workers continues through licensed agencies authorised by the Ministry of Labour.
He added that inspection campaigns will continue across the Kingdom in coordination with the Ministry of Interior and the Public Security Directorate to detect violations and take legal action against employers hiring undocumented foreign workers.
The inspections also aim to verify that non-Jordanian workers recruited by private sector establishments were employed by those same entities.
Zayoud warned that companies found to be in violation, such as by hiring foreign workers who do not work under their sponsorship, would face strict penalties, including suspension from recruiting foreign labour and the non-renewal of existing work permits.
