Police nab two suspects in assault on journalist

The Jordan Times

AMMAN — Police on Saturday said they arrested two suspects in connection with the alleged assault against reporter Faisal Tamimi in Zarqa a day earlier, official sources said.

“A special investigation team worked for 24 hours to identify and locate the suspects,” Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said.

The two suspects are currently being questioned by investigators and will be referred to the concerned judiciary for further legal action, Sartawi added.

Tamimi was allegedly attacked in front of his house by two hooded men who were carrying blunt objects, according to Sartawi.

“The reporter was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment and is currently hospitalised in fair condition,” Sartawi added.

Meanwhile, the Jordan Press Association (JPA) President Tareq Momani condemned the attack on Tamimi, stating that they are following up on the incident with the concerned authorities.

“We are very concerned about this incident that targeted one of our colleagues,” Momani told The Jordan Times.

Tamimi is a professional reporter who is specialised in the economy sector and is the editor-in-chief of Al Maqar Electronic Website, Momani added.

“We do not know the reason for the attack and do not have any clue on who attacked him or why because he does not have enemies,” Momani added.

Video clips circulated on social media showed two hooded men reportedly carrying what appeared to be large wooden bars and approaching a vehicle that was parked in a residential area.

At the same time, a man was seen exiting his vehicle and holding the hand of a young child when he was attacked by the two hooded men.

The man could be seen pushing the child back with one hand while trying to shield himself with the other hand.

The man then ran towards the attackers after securing the child, and the three engaged in a small scuffle that ended with the two hooded men hitting him on the head with the wooden bars.
