AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi held a phone call on Tuesday with Syria's Foreign Minister Asaad Al Shibani.

In a joint statement, the two ministers emphasised the deep ties between Jordan and Syria and their shared commitment to strengthening and developing relations across various fields. They stressed the importance of addressing any issues that could strain ties through, based on their firm belief in the interconnected security and shared destiny of the two countries.

Safadi reaffirmed Jordan’s full respect for Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, security, stability and the safety of its citizens.

He said that Jordan considers Syria’s security and stability an integral part of its own security, expressing pride in the unprecedented levels of cooperation, coordination and trust achieved in relations between the two countries and their peoples.

The two ministers discussed the implications of airstrikes carried out by the Jordanian Armed Forces on Monday against sites belonging to the Daesh terror group. Safadi said the strikes were based on field intelligence and aimed at neutralizing confirmed threats and imminent terrorist operations targeting Jordan’s security.

Safadi expressed deep regret and sorrow over the deaths of innocent civilians during the operations targeting Daesh, which he described as a shared threat to both countries.

He extended his heartfelt condolences to the Syrian people and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

He stressed that Jordan is equally committed to protecting the safety of Syrian citizens and its own citizens.

The two ministers also emphasised the close cooperation between Jordan and Syria in addressing common challenges, particularly combating terrorism and preventing the smuggling of drugs and weapons across their shared border through effective and sustainable institutional channels.

Recognising the importance of direct security and field-level coordination in their joint efforts to combat terrorism, protect civilians and ensure the highest standards of accuracy and transparency, the two ministers agreed to establish a joint security committee to examine all details and facts surrounding the recent operations and follow up on their implications.

The committee will also work to develop field-level and intelligence coordination mechanisms to address terrorist threats while safeguarding Syrian sovereignty and protecting the lives of innocent civilians, in a manner that reflects the strength and resilience of the fraternal relations between the two countries and their peoples.
