GAM launches campaign to remove illegal barriers from Amman streets, sidewalks

AMMAN — The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) has launched a citywide campaign to remove illegal barriers from streets and sidewalks in an effort to ease traffic congestion, improve the urban landscape and ensure pedestrian safety.

In a statement made available to The Jordan Times, municipal authorities stressed that “sidewalks and roads are public property and cannot be reserved by shops, companies or official institutions.”

The campaign, which covers all areas within GAM’s jurisdiction, targets barriers of all kinds, including concrete, metal and plastic structures.

GAM spokesperson Naser Rahamneh told Al Mamlaka TV that the initiative is aimed at increasing street capacity, reducing traffic congestion and facilitating pedestrian movement.

“Our field teams have already begun removing metal and plastic barriers illegally placed in front of buildings, including government offices. These barriers obstruct both traffic and pedestrians, and they have no legal basis,” Rahamneh said.

According to GAM, the campaign is part of a broader effort to preserve the capital’s aesthetic character and guarantee equal access to public spaces.

The municipality also warned that businesses and institutions that continue to place barriers will face fines and other legal measures, noting that enforcement applies to all violators without exception.

Residents expressed support for the move, saying it would restore access to sidewalks and improve traffic conditions. “It has been frustrating to navigate the city with all these barriers,” Rana Saif, a local resident, told The Jordan Times.

Another resident, Mahmoud Khatib, said the campaign would benefit both drivers and pedestrians. “This campaign will not only help pedestrians but also reduce traffic jams. I hope the municipality continues monitoring these violations,” he added.
