Rainfall reaches 70% of annual average — JMD

AMMAN — Jordan’s current rainfall season has so far exceeded its long-term average across most parts of the Kingdom, with accumulated rainfall reaching around 70 per cent of the annual norm.

Director of the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) Raed Al Khattab said the 2025–2026 rain season is shaping up to be a “good season”, noting that the figures were recorded by the end of the third quarter of the winter “Marbaaniya” period.

Western and central regions have recorded between 70 and 100 per cent of their annual rainfall averages, with parts of the eastern central areas and the southern Jordan Valley surpassing their seasonal norms, Al Khattab said.

He added that northern governorates received between 55 and 66 per cent of their annual averages, while rainfall in the central and eastern Badia ranged from 51 to 70 per cent. The southern Badia also recorded encouraging levels, reaching 61 to 80 per cent of its annual average.

Rainfall in the south-western regions showed greater variation, ranging from 47 to 97 per cent, with limited areas still recording amounts below their expected levels for this time of year, he said.

Al Khattab stressed that rainfall totals to date remain above the seasonal average in most areas, a development expected to have a positive impact on water reserves and the agricultural sector.

He added that the accompanying rainfall map illustrates accumulated percentages across the Kingdom as of Monday, January 19, noting that the department continues to closely monitor weather conditions and issue regular updates with transparency and accuracy.
