Rare Lyrics by Bob Dylan Expected to Fetch £19,000 at Auction

Asharq Al-Awsat

A 1966 manuscript, on which a young Bob Dylan typed and wrote lyrics for a track on his "Blonde on Blonde" album and another song he later abandoned, went on sale at Sotheby's auction house.

The manuscript is valued at £12,000 - £15,000 ($15,000 -$19,000) and will be open to bidding online until May 12.

The single sheet of paper shows the American singer's creative musings as he drafted "Most Likely You Go Your Way", one of the album's most memorable songs, Reuters reported.

What makes the manuscript particularly interesting, however, is the presence of a second, abandoned song typed over twelve lines across the top half of the page. It contains a repeated refrain about "running with the devil", before ending in fragments with the words: "It's just me and you … Far from home."

The Pop singer is regarded as the voice of a generation for songs that captured the 1960s spirit of rebellion and independence. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016.

Bob Dylan recently released his first original music in eight years, a 17-minute ballad about the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The song "Murder Most Foul" is more like a poem than a classical song, which was played slowly over a delicate instrumental backing of violin, piano and hushed percussion.

According to AFP, the song starts with the following lyrics: "It was a dark day in Dallas; November '63; A day that will live on in infamy."

The song describes what happened on that day with a glance at the epoch back then. Bob Dylan didn't reveal when he composed the song, but used the release occasion to thank his fans "for their support and loyalty all these years" on Twitter.

The 78-year-old singer latest work was his album Tempest in 2012. Dylan cancelled his April concerts in Japan due to the spread of the novel coronavirus. However, his North American tour is still scheduled and his first concert will take place in Bend, Oregon on June 4.
