The New York Post reported that New York City went five days without a shooting victim, a milestone not seen in 30 years, as announced by the New York City Police Department (NYPD).

“This is the longest we’ve gone without a shooting victim since the start of the CompStat era,” said the department, referencing the police management system implemented in the 1990s.

However, just four minutes after the announcement, the streak ended when a 34-year-old man was shot multiple times in the leg in Brooklyn’s East New York neighborhood around 10:15 PM. The victim was taken to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition, and no arrests have been made according to the New York Post.

As of Sunday, the NYPD had recorded 45 shooting victims this year, matching last year’s figures for the same period. There have been 29 shootings in 2025 as of last Sunday, compared to 39 in the same period in 2024.

In an effort to combat gun violence, Mayor Eric Adams revealed this week that the NYPD has seized over 20,000 illegal firearms since he took office in 2022, around 3,000 more than during the previous three years.
