Google is abandoning its diversity-based hiring goals and reassessing its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, following a broader trend of US companies scaling back on such efforts.
Previously, Google had been a strong advocate for inclusive policies, especially after the 2020 protests against police violence. According to Reuters, CEO Sundar Pichai had set a target for 30 percent of Google's leaders to come from underrepresented groups by 2025.
US President Donald Trump and his allies have frequently criticized DEI policies. Since returning to the White House over two weeks ago, Trump has instructed government agencies to eliminate such initiatives.
Companies like Meta and Amazon have scaled back their DEI programs.
In contrast, Apple has pushed back against this trend. Last month, the tech giant's board urged investors to vote against a proposal to end its diversity policies.
