The Jordan Times

AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Saturday held a trilateral meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al Shibani and US Special Envoy for Syria and Ambassador to Turkey Thomas Barrack to discuss the evolving situation in Syria.

The talks centred on the ceasefire agreement reached earlier the same day in Syria’s Suwayda province, a key development aimed at de-escalating violence, protecting civilians, and restoring calm to the area, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

Safadi and Barrack expressed strong support for the ceasefire and the Syrian government’s efforts to implement it, reaffirming their countries’ commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the safety and well-being of the Syrian people. They also stressed that a stable Syria is vital for regional peace and security.

The officials agreed on a package of practical measures designed to enforce and sustain the ceasefire, bolster internal security, and improve governance. These steps include the deployment of Syrian security forces in As Suwayda, the release of detainees held by all parties, promotion of community reconciliation, enhancement of civil peace, and the facilitation of humanitarian aid delivery, the statement said.

Safadi and Barrack also welcomed the Syrian government’s pledge to hold accountable those responsible for violations against civilians in As Suwayda. They also expressed support for ongoing efforts to counter violence, sectarianism, incitement, and hate speech in the province.

Shibani commended Jordan and the US for their constructive roles in helping to secure the ceasefire and backing its implementation on the ground.
