AMMAN — The Ministry of Labour and the Amman Chamber of Commerce (ACC) on Saturday agreed on stepping up cooperation towards training and employing Jordanians.

During a meeting that brought together Labour Minister Yousef Shamali and the chamber’s board of directors, the two sides stressed that addressing unemployment requires joint national efforts.

Talks also stressed the need for new mechanisms to rehabilitate young Jordanians and link them with employers, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Shamali expressed the ministry’s keenness on regulating the labour market so that more work is available to Jordanians. He also emphasised the importance of reviewing the ministry’s inspection mechanism of private sector facilities towards reaching smart inspection and self-inspection.

Moreover, a meeting was agreed between the chamber and the Vocational and Technical Skills Development Commission in preparation for signing a memo for training Jordanians towards employment, the minister noted, adding that it was also agreed to coordinate with the Development and Employment Fund to avail the facilities provided for entrepreneurial projects.

ACC President Khalil Hajj Tawfiq offered the chamber’s capabilities to help the government address the issue of unemployment, pointing out that the chamber’s subscribers reached 50,000 companies and institutions.

A total of 540,000 Jordanians work in the business and services sector, Tawfiq added, noting that they are registered with the Social Security Corporation.
