AMMAN — An official source expected that Jordan will send humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, following the decision to reopen the King Hussein Bridge (Allenby Bridge) crossing to transport goods and aid to Gaza.
The unnamed source was quoted in Al Mamlaka TV as confirming that the crossing has been reopened for the movement of goods and humanitarian aid to Gaza, emphasising that the continued flow of aid is a humanitarian necessity that cannot be delayed.
The source said that Jordan consistently calls for keeping the crossing open permanently, and not using it as a bargaining chip or closing it under any pretext. It stressed that the crossing is a vital lifeline for delivering aid to the besieged Gaza Strip.
The source explained that since the beginning of the conflict, Jordan has intensified its political and humanitarian efforts to secure safe corridors for aid, adding that “while reopening the Allenby crossing is a step in the right direction, it alone will not suffice unless a continuous and unconditional flow of aid to Gaza is guaranteed.
Israel will reopen the crossing on the Israeli-controlled border between Jordan and the occupied West Bank to humanitarian aid trucks destined for Gaza for the first time since late September, an Israeli official said on Tuesday, AFP reported.
"Following the understandings and a directive of the political echelon, starting tomorrow (Wednesday) the transfer of goods and aid from Jordan to the area of Judea and Samaria and to the Gaza Strip will be permitted through the Allenby Crossing", an Israeli official said in a statement, using the Israeli Biblical term for the West Bank.
"All aid trucks destined for the Gaza Strip will proceed under escort and security, following a thorough security inspection", the official added.
