What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is considered the holiest month for Muslims worldwide. It is a time for fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. The month commemorates the first revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad, and fasting during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.

Key points about Ramadan:

Fasting (Sawm): Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs. The fast is a form of self-discipline and a way to purify the body and soul.
Prayer (Salat): Muslims perform extra prayers during Ramadan, including Taraweeh (night prayers), which are performed after the Isha (evening) prayer.
Charity (Zakat): Giving to those in need is emphasized during Ramadan, and many Muslims give their Zakat (charitable donation) during this time.
Eid al-Fitr: Ramadan ends with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, a holiday that marks the end of fasting. It is a time for family gatherings, feasts, and giving gifts.
Dates: Since Ramadan follows the Islamic lunar calendar, its dates vary each year in the Gregorian calendar. It begins with the sighting of the new moon, and its exact start date differs by location.
The spiritual significance of Ramadan lies in self-reflection, increased devotion, and closeness to God, as well as fostering empathy for the less fortunate.
