The Yemen’s Houthis announced Tuesday night that they carried out two “special military operations” against the US navy in the Arabian and the Red seas.
Spokesperson Yahya Sare’e said the first operation targeted the US aircraft carrier (USS Abraham Lincoln) in the Arabian Sea with a number of cruise missiles and drones. Sare’e added the operation was pre-emptive as the “American enemy was preparing to carry out hostile operations targeting our country”.
The second operation targeted two American destroyers in the Red Sea also with a number of ballistic missiles and drones.
The statement said the operations were successful and achieved their objectives, taking a total of eight hours in a row to carry out.
The pentagon said in a statement afterwards that the two US destroyers were attacked as they transited the Bab al-Mandab Strait, but the warships defeated the attacks.
The US warships "were attacked by at least eight one-way attack uncrewed aerial systems, five anti-ship ballistic missiles and three anti-ship cruise missiles, which were successfully engaged and defeated," Pentagon spokesperson Major General Pat Ryder told journalists – according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
"The vessels were not damaged, no personnel were hurt," Ryder said.
A claim from the Huthis that they also attacked the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier is not accurate, he added.
"Based on the information I have, it was not attacked, contrary to some of the allegations... by the Huthis," Ryder said, declining to specify the carrier's location.
