China-Arab Cooperation Forum postponed over regional circumstances – ambassador

The Jordan Times

AMMAN — The China-Arab Cooperation Forum, originally scheduled for June, has been postponed until further notice due to current regional circumstances in the Middle East, Chinese Ambassador to Jordan Guo Wei announced Sunday.

Speaking during a press conference at the Chinese Embassy in Amman, Guo said the decision was taken in light of ongoing regional tensions and the preoccupation of many Arab countries with internal and regional developments.

“The current conditions are not yet mature,” the ambassador said, noting that most Arab states are presently focused on their own affairs amid escalating regional instability.

Guo stressed that the postponement was unrelated to the recent summit held on Thursday between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump in Beijing.

“There is no connection whatsoever between the postponement and the China-U.S. summit,” he said, adding that the forum’s schedule is determined through joint Arab-Chinese coordination.

He noted that selecting a new date may require additional consultations since the original June timeline is no longer feasible.

Despite the postponement, the ambassador underlined that cooperation between China and Arab countries remains strong and ongoing.

Responding to questions about Chinese investments in Jordan, Guo said the forum was intended to support greater Chinese investment in Arab countries, including Jordan.

“China is a trustworthy friend of the Arab peoples,” he said.

He further reassured reporters that Beijing’s core policy positions regarding major Middle Eastern issues have not changed following U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent state visit to China.

The ambassador provided an extensive briefing on the recent bilateral summit in Beijing between Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Trump, saying that President Xi plans to pay a reciprocal visit to the United States in the fall of 2026.

This exchange of visits within the same calendar year reflects the strength of relations between the two countries guided by a new strategic vision across various fields, as recently announced by the Chinese president.

During their formal talks at the Great Hall of the People on Thursday, Xi said the world is witnessing “unprecedented transformations unseen in a century” amid a volatile international environment.

“Can China and the United States avoid the Thucydides Trap and create a new model of major-country relations?” Xi asked during the summit, according to remarks presented by the ambassador.

Xi expressed his look forward to steering the giant ship of China-U.S. relations to make 2026 a historic and pivotal year that opens a new chapter and provides strategic guidance over the next three years and beyond.

To achieve this, President Xi said that “constructive strategic stability” must be translated into concrete actions rather than remaining a slogan. He defined this as a positive stability grounded in cooperation as its cornerstone, a healthy stability characterized by moderate competition, a resilient stability with manageable differences, and a sustainable stability upheld by commitments to peace.

He also noted that China-US economic ties are mutually beneficial and win-win in nature, stressing that dialogue and equal consultation on an equal footing is the only correct option where differences and frictions exist.

The Chinese president said recent bilateral trade talks on Wednesday had produced “generally balanced and positive results,” adding that China would continue expanding its economic opening-up and welcome deeper cooperation with US companies.

On Taiwan, Xi said the issue is the most important in China-US relations, warning that mismanagement it could lead to confrontation and conflict.

He emphasized that maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait represents the greatest common interest of both countries, but stressed that so-called Taiwan independence and peace across the Strait are as incompatible as fire and water.

Trump, for his part, described his state visit to China as “a great honor,” praising Xi as “a great leader” and expressing readiness to strengthen cooperation, maintain close communication with Beijing and make bilateral relations better than ever before.

Trump said that as the world's two most important and powerful countries, the two presidents are capable of achieving many great and positive things for both countries and the world.

The two leaders also exchanged views on several regional and international issues, including the Middle East, Ukraine and the Korean Peninsula, while agreeing to support each other in hosting upcoming APEC and G20 summits in 2026.

Guo concluded by detailing an informal meeting on Friday between the two heads of state at the Zhongnanhai leadership compound ahead of Trump's departure. The two leaders held casual conversations during a walk through the compound gardens, where President Xi underscored that the two sides established critical mutual understandings on keeping economic and trade relations steady, broadening practical cooperation across multiple sectors, and properly addressing each side’s concerns.

Xi added that Beijing and Washington pledged to boost communication and synchronization regarding both global and regional developments, asserting that the visit successfully expanded mutual insight, reinforced mutual trust, and advanced the welfare of both citizenships.

“President Trump hopes to make America great again, and I am dedicated to leading the Chinese people toward the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation,” Xi said, stressing that the two countries can advance each other’s development and rejuvenation through stronger cooperation.

For his part, President Trump conveyed deep appreciation to President Xi for the personal invitation to Zhongnanhai, describing his state visit to China as an unforgettable and highly successful endeavor that captured global attention.

He said the two sides had reached a series of important common understandings, signed a number of agreements, and resolved many issues, bringing enormous benefits to both countries and the world as a whole.

Trump expressed an eager willingness to maintain sincere, thorough communication with his counterpart and said that he looks forward to hosting Xi in Washington, DC.
