Jordan targeted by 29 inciting rumours in early April — AKEED

The Jordan Times

AMMAN — The Jordanian Media Credibility Monitor (AKEED) said that 29 inciting rumours targeting Jordan and its positions were recorded in the first 10 days of April, out of a total of 71 rumours documented during the period.

The monitor noted a rise in Jordanians’ exposure to misinformation, averaging seven rumours per day, up from five per day in March.

In a statement, AKEED said its April report indicates a surge in the circulation of inciting rumours, particularly those promoted by foreign media outlets and accounts across seven social media platforms.

According to the monitor, these actors have been disseminating false and misleading information disconnected from reality. It added that such claims have been countered by a steady flow of information from multiple official and credible independent sources, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Zaid Momani, a media monitor at AKEED, said that the spreaders of rumours attempt to shift public mood from optimism to negativity and influence how the public perceives events.

He added that such actors often manipulate video clips by taking them out of context or spreading inaccurate information in an attempt to deepen negative perceptions among audiences.

Momani noted that early April, which saw the announcement of a ceasefire involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, witnessed a rise in inciting rumours circulated by foreign media outlets and user accounts on largely unregulated public platforms.

He added that some of this content is later republished as journalistic material by foreign media outlets whose editorial policies and funding sources align with such narratives.

“These practices reflect a lack of neutrality, imbalance in reporting, and the promotion of hate speech, while disregarding the public’s right to accurate information,” Momani said, noting that such content ultimately serves specific agendas and seeks to create division among social media audiences in violation of professional media standards.
