Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said Monday that it had shot down an MQ-1 drone over the Strait of Hormuz.

 

The IRGC said it had brought down an advanced MQ-1 drone in the airspace over the Strait of Hormuz on Monday morning.

 

Following US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, Tehran restricted passage through the strategic waterway, while US forces imposed a naval blockade targeting vessels traveling to or departing from Iranian ports.

 

The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Gulf with the Arabian Sea, is one of the world’s most important routes for oil and gas shipments. Oman and Iran lie on opposite sides of the strait and continue to hold consultations on maritime security and navigation through the strategic waterway.

 

On June 18, the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the war in the region on all fronts. Under the memorandum, the two sides were scheduled to hold negotiations over a 60-day period, ending August 17, to reach a final agreement. However, the fate of the talks remains unclear following a renewed escalation in tensions between the two countries last month.
