Jordan condemns Israeli extremists' storming of Al Aqsa Mosque

The Jordan Times

AMMAN — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday condemned the storming of the Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif by extremist groups and their provocative actions carried out under the protection of the Israeli occupation forces.

In a statement, the ministry described this action as a "blatant violation" of the historical and legal status of Jerusalem and its holy sites, reiterating that Israel holds no sovereignty over Al Aqsa Mosque.

The Ministry spokesperson Fouad Majali reitrated Jordan’s rejection and strong condemnation of the ongoing incursions and provocative actions by extremist groups, describing them as a blatant violation of international law and international humanitarian law, warning of the risks posed by their continuation and of Israeli attempts, as the occupying power, to impose new facts aimed at dividing the holy site both temporally and spatially.

He called on the international community to fulfill its legal and moral responsibilities by compelling Israel to halt its ongoing violations of Islamic and Christian holy sites in occupied Jerusalem, stop its dangerous escalation in the West Bank, end its aggression on the Gaza Strip, and provide the necessary protection for the Palestinian people while safeguarding their right to establish an independent state on their national soil.

Majali also emphasised that Al Aqsa Mosque, with its total area of 144 dunums, is a place of worship exclusively for Muslims, reiterating that the Jordan-run Jerusalem Awqaf and Aqsa Affairs Department is the sole authority responsible for supervising the holy site’s affairs according to international law and the legal and historical status quo.
