Inflation rises in Jordan in latest CPI numbers

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) has increased by 1.67 percent in the first half of this year in Jordan, reaching 110.36 points compared to 108.55 points in the same period last year.
 
According to the monthly report issued by the Department of Statistics on Thursday, the primary commodity groups contributing to the cumulative rise in the CPI in the first half of this year, compared to the same period last year, include “personal belongings”, which rose by 8.38 percent, water and sewage services by 7.34 percent, union contributions by 5.86 percent, rents by 4.03 percent, and meat and poultry by 3.74 percent.
 
Additionally, CPI for June, 2024 increased to 110.74 points compared to 108.83 points for the same month last year, marking a rise of 1.75 percent. .
 
The report highlighted that the notable commodity groups contributing to the increase in the consumer price index for June 2024 compared to June 2023 were “personal belongings” at 10.28 percent, water and sewage services at 7.34 percent, union contributions at 5.86 percent, fruits and nuts at 5.64 percent, and vegetables, dried legumes, and canned foods at 5.49 percent. 
 
Conversely, declines in groups such as oils and fats by 2.37 percent, clothing by 1.59 percent, household textiles by 1.25 percent, and furniture, carpets, and mats by 1.19 percent helped to offset this rise.
 
Furthermore, the report noted that the CPI for June this year rose by 0.15 percent, reaching 110.74 points compared to 110.58 points in the previous month of May.
