The devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar on Friday, has killed over 1,000 people and injured more than 2,376. The powerful quake sent tremors as far as China and Thailand, where buildings collapsed, and panic spread.
Myanmar’s ruling military junta declared a state of emergency, warning that the death toll could rise further. General Min Aung Hlaing said rescue efforts are ongoing, with many still missing. The epicenter was near Mandalay at a depth of 6.2 miles, followed by a strong 6.4-magnitude aftershock.
In Thailand's Bangkok, six people were confirmed dead, 22 injured, and 101 missing. Authorities declared the capital a disaster zone after a high-rise under construction collapsed near Chatuchak Market, sending a massive dust cloud into the air. Footage on social media captured scenes of chaos as people ran in fear.
With aftershocks continuing, officials have urged caution as rescue teams work to clear debris and search for survivors.
