“Israeli” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said he reversed his decision to appoint Eli Sharvit as the new Shin Bet (domestic security) chief, backtracking 24 hours after the announcement.
“The Prime Minister thanked Vice Adm. Sharvit for his willingness to be serve,” Netanyahu’s office says in a statement, “but informed him that after further thought, he intends to interview other candidates.”
It is believed the decision is influenced by Shavit’s reported participation in anti-government protests in 2023 over plans to overhaul the “Israeli” judiciary.
Netanyahu dismissed Ronen Bar from his post as head of the Shin Bet earlier in March, citing an “ongoing lack of trust” in him.
