AMMAN — The Foreign Ministry welcomed the UN General Assembly’s Friday vote, backing the "New York Declaration", which supports the two-state solution.
The General Assembly’s resolution backs the two-state solution as the only path to achieving peace and stability in the region and realising the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, paramount of which is their right to an independent state of their own.
In a statement on Friday, the Foreign Ministry hailed the Saudi and French efforts in organising the high-level conference on the two-state solution, which was held in New York in July.
The ministry said that the next meeting at the UN Headquarters will build on the conference in July and will be an opportunity for all member states to back the recognition of an independent Palestinian state on the pre-1967 borders under the two-state solution with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The General Assembly voted Friday to back the "New York Declaration", which seeks to breathe new life into the two-state solution between Israel and Palestine, without the involvement of Hamas.
The text was adopted by 142 votes in favour, 10 against, including Israel and key ally the United States, and 12 abstentions, AFP reported.
The declaration also calls on Hamas to "end its rule in Gaza and hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority, with international engagement and support, in line with the objective of a sovereign and independent Palestinian State".
