AMMAN — Head of the Amman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Col. Ahmad Malkawi has said that the crime detection rate has reached approximately 88 per cent in 2024, marking an increase of 3 per cent compared to 2023. 

 

Crime rates also decreased by 4 per cent, which aligns with strategic objectives set by the CID, in coordination with other departments affiliated with the Public Security Directorate (PSD), the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Thursday.  

 

Malkawi referred to the ongoing Royal support provided to the CID by His Majesty King Abdullah, the Supreme Commander of the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army. 

 

He added that this support includes equipping the department with the latest investigative tools and technologies to enhance its ability to prevent, detect and solve crimes, as well as arrest perpetrators and refer them to judicial authorities.  

 

He stressed that 2024 witnessed an increase in crime detection rates and a decrease in the number of normal crimes such as fraud, murder and theft. 

 

Malkawi said that in cases of theft, the detection rate reached 92 per cent, while the detection rate for murders was 99 per cent, adding that there were 86 murder cases recorded across the Kingdom in 2024.  

 

He highlighted a significant drop of over 50 per cent in car theft cases compared to previous years, with a detection rate of 87 per cent. 

 

He attributed this to stricter penalties for car theft, security campaigns, and the arrest of individuals involved in handling stolen vehicles.  

 

Regarding fraud, Malkawi said that it has two types: traditional fraud (e.g., fraudulent projects and scams among individuals) and cyber fraud, which requires big efforts since it is a relatively new kind of crimes. 

 

Financial cyber fraud has become increasingly prevalent due to technological advancements, including schemes such as fake promises of profit, and fundraising scams.

 

He pointed out that the PSD director instructed stakeholders to develop the Cybercrime Unit and inaugurated its new headquarters, to provide the best services to citizens. 

 

The unit has been equipped with a digital lab and staffed with specialists dedicated to handling cybercrime cases, Malkawi added.
